What is the Kingdom of Heaven?

What does it mean when the scriptures refer to the "kingdom of heaven"?
For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 5:20)
This is the verse that brought this question to my mind. In what way(s) does our righteousness need to exceed the Pharisees?
