Why Do We Need Prophets?

I love the message from the First Presidency this month, "Why Do We Need Prophets?" I thought of this passage as I started to read it.

Moroni 7:21-25 And now I come to that faith, of which I said I would speak; and I will tell you the way whereby ye may lay hold on every good thing.
For behold, God knowing all things, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing.
And God also declared unto prophets, by his own mouth, that Christ should come.
And behold, there were divers ways that he did manifest things unto the children of men, which were good; and all things which are good cometh of Christ; otherwise men were fallen, and there could no good thing come unto them.
Wherefore, by the ministering of angels, and by every word which proceeded forth out of the mouth of God, men began to exercise faith in Christ; and thus by faith, they did lay hold upon every good thing; and thus it was until the coming of Christ.

Each part in the largest print I put methods that God has used to get women and men to exercise faith in Jesus Christ.

1. He sent angels. What a glorious fact! God sends angels to minister. To come personally to the children of men for the purpose of directing us to the Son of God.
2. He declared unto prophets that Christ should come.
3. He used diverse ways to manifest things that are good and all good comes from Christ.

Here are three ways God directs us to Jesus. We need prophets and prophets always point us to Jesus Christ the Son of God. The Savior of our souls. I am grateful for the mercy of God that we again have prophets of God on the earth. I listen to their words to hear how I might come unto Christ completely.

How do I know what is true?

This is a cardinal question. If I am deceived I will follow a path of pain and sorrow. Loneliness and and frustration.

My mind goes to this advice from a prophet a thousand years ago.

 Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil. For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night. 

For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God. But whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do evil, and believe not in Christ, and deny him, and serve not God, then ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of the devil; for after this manner doth the devil work, for he persuadeth no man to do good, no, not one; neither do his angels; neither do they who subject themselves unto him.
And now, my brethren, seeing that ye know the light by which ye may judge, which light is the light of Christ, see that ye do not judge wrongfully; for with that same judgment which ye judge ye shall also be judged. 

Wherefore, I beseech of you, brethren, that ye should search diligently in the light of Christ that ye may know good from evil; and if ye will lay hold upon every good thing, and condemn it not, ye certainly will be a child of Christ. (Mor 7:14-19)

 I know of no wiser words to direct me in the path of truth. I have found it invaluable in recognizing truth from error.

Living an Abundant Life

Life is challenging. At times I feel like the circus act where I am spinning plates on top of poles. As I was thinking about how some of those plates have fallen recently for me I thought of the First Presidency message of Jan, "Living the Abundant Life". President Monson defines it as "a life filled with an abundance of success, goodness, and blessings".  He went on to describe the ABCs to help us all gain the abundant life.

I definitely need to improve on those accounts.  I also searched for "Balance LDS" and found this article about Julie B. Beck, "Go to the Lord for Help with Balance" 

"“When we make covenants, we promise that everything belongs to the Lord—our time, our abilities, everything we have is His. That means we have to go to Him to know how to balance all that.”"

Another article is "Seeking a Balanced Life"

He give four areas of priorities: our love for Heavenly Father and His Son, our care of our families, our service to the Lord, and our life’s temporal work.

I am encouraged by the testimony of President Hinckley,

“… How do you balance them? I don’t think that is difficult. I served in many capacities in this Church. I am the father of five children, who were young and growing up when I was serving in those various capacities. … We enjoyed life. … We just did what the Church expected us to do.”

Elder Hallstrom also said,

"When we are out of balance, we have a choice. We can delay making changes and experience the tragedy of a failing family or the sorrow of losing our own spirituality; or we can be attentive and continually nudged by the whisperings of the Holy Spirit to make necessary adjustments. Seeking balance among the essential responsibilities of life is preparatory to salvation."

...

"For many, properly caring for the family is the first area of compromise when other demands arise, since the results of neglect are not always immediately apparent. But nurturing the husband-wife relationship and building a spiritual home require men and women of vision and commitment."

I am sure the Lord will help me balance my responsibilities in the four areas of priority. I must seek His wisdom and ask for the courage and strength to carry it out.

On Sunday, we had Ward Conference. I loved listening to our Bishop and Stake President. The best part of the meeting for me though was when we ended the service singing "I Know that My Redeemer Lives".

In order to recover and collect strength

Bruce Webster looked up the Greek word that is translated as “rest”.  It means, "to cause or permit one to cease from any movement or labour in order to recover and collect his strength".  This gives new meaning to the word for me.

Beware of Pride

A great message that needs to be remembered. Read the text at lds.org 

Most of us think of pride as self-centeredness, conceit, boastfulness, arrogance, or haughtiness. All of these are elements of the sin, but the heart, or core, is still missing. 

The central feature of pride is enmity—enmity toward God and enmity toward our fellowmen. Enmity means “hatred toward, hostility to, or a state of opposition.” It is the power by which Satan wishes to reign over us. 

Pride is essentially competitive in nature. We pit our will against God’s. When we direct our pride toward God, it is in the spirit of “my will and not thine be done.” As Paul said, they “seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.” (Philip. 2:21.)

I've always been able to count on you

At 17:08 in the video Mr Willie Krueger imagines himself visiting the baby Jesus in the manger.

I'm Willy Krueger and I'm custodian over at the Beck Apartments, but, but you know that, don't you. You know that. I guess nobody here can see me or hear me except you. I didn't bring a gift, I, but I, I guess that's not important. Thank you for everything you've done for me. As long as I can remember you've been right by my side. I'll never forget when you walked with me right in those first few hours after I lost Martha. I-I've always been able to count on you, when I felt dark inside and when I... You were right there, right, every time, right there. Even when I didn't feel good about myself, I knew that you cared for me enough, and that, that made me feel better. Like that time I got mad with Mabel Huntington because she broke her pipes on purpose just so she could have somebody to see while I came up and fixed them for her. Boy, I hollered at her, boy I hollered real loud. But then, then I got to thinking - you loved Mabel just as much as you loved me and I should treat her the way you want me to. Something in the Way She Moves

There are a couple of James Taylor songs that sum up how I feel about my wife and her soul saving influence in my life. I am so grateful for her love, patience and example of unwearied diligence. "She has the power to go where no one else can find me and to silently remind me of the happiness and the good times that I know"

To me, the words are nice, the way they sound.
I like to hear them best that way, it doesn't much matter what they mean.
